Several homes get a little bit of a transformation for their on-screen appearance. However, I think one of the homes that looks the most different is the house from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Over the years the color of the house has changed several times, the white picket fence is gone, but the unique shape is still recognizable.

Set designers attached fake windows on the roof to give the appearance of a second story. The house from Young Sheldon is not in Texas, it is a short drive from the Warner Bros Studio where the tv series is filmed. If you take the Warner Bros Studio Tour you might get to see some places in the backlots where the show has been filmed but they never open up the sets in the soundstages for viewing. However, if you’re a fan of The Big Bang Theory (and old Sheldon) you can see Sheldon and Leonard’s apartment and even sit in Sheldon’s spot.

Kids under 7 used to be free, but they are now charged $5. There’s such a wide variety of rooms at House on the Rock, focusing on everything from music to animals to technology to dolls. You’ll experience sensory overload as the music and sights of each room overwhelm you. It took me a long time to figure out exactly what the House on the Rock attraction was.

The Gamble House is designated as California Historical Landmark #871 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The public is invited to visit the Eames House for a self-guided tour of the exterior during open hours. Admission is $10 and reservations are required to visit the grounds. Groups with 10 or more visitors must make an appointment and sign a group release form prior to visiting. Guided, one-hour personal tours of the interior are available for $275 (1-2 adults) and $450 (3-4 adults).

The Derby House was built for businessman James Derby, though due to a separation with his wife he would never live here. The textile blocks are supposed to help keep the interior bright.

Self-guided tours are available Thursday-Sunday from 11 a.m. Pricing for the timed tickets is $7 for adults, $3 for students and seniors with I.D., and free for children under 12 when accompanied by a paying adult. Docent-led tours are also available, with options for a one-hour tour or 20-minute exterior-only tour. The Avila Adobe is LA’s oldest house still standing in its original location, and is designated as California Historic Landmark #145.
Free street parking is available on Corona Del Mar which is a five-minute walk from the house. It can take many hours to walk through the House on the Rock, and it’s nearly impossible to see it all in one day. Among the collections of collections within is the world’s largest carousel, boasting 269 carousel animals, 182 lanterns, more than 20,000 lights, and hundreds of mannequin angels hanging from the ceiling all around it.
There are a bunch of instruments that play on their own, thanks to machines. Admission price for the full tour in Spring Green is $33 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $18 for kids over age 7.
The days of the week, hours of operation, and open portions of the attraction vary depending on the experience. Nearby is the American Players Theatre (APT) — a nationally known company with a great outdoor amphitheater — and Governor Dodge State Park, both worth a stop if you’re making a day or weekend trip. The town of Spring Green itself has a few cute shops and restaurants, though it’s largely escaped becoming a tourist hotspot, despite its crowd-inducing attractions. They require no vast spectacle, no budget-busting entrance fee, no unmet expectations.
